Returning Hybrid Students to In-Person Learning

Returning Hybrid Elementary Students to In-Person Learning

Communication from DCSD:

We are pleased to announce that we are on track with planning to begin full-time, in-person learning at all DCSD elementary schools on our target date of October 19, 2020. As a reminder, we will update the Board of Education of our progress at the next regular board meeting on October 6, 2020.

Teacher Planning Days - October 8 and 9

We will be designating Thursday, October 8, and Friday, October 9 as teacher/administrator/staff planning days so that schools can make necessary preparations to start full-time, in-person learning on October 19 (such as moving furniture, setting up classrooms, etc.). Students will be expected to participate in asynchronous learning on those dates. Please be sure to mark these dates on your calendar.

Requests to Change Learning Models

As a reminder, during the Express Check-In process in August, families were asked to commit to their learning model selection through the first semester. DCSD staffed the hybrid and eLearning models based on these commitments, and keeping students in their current learning model through the semester will help to minimize disruptions to learning and minimize the need to increase or change staffing (i.e. changing students’ teacher and classroom assignments). All families will have the opportunity to change attendance models for the second semester (January 2021). Additional information about how to make that change will be forthcoming in November 2020.

We understand there may be extenuating circumstances for some families, however, schools may not be able to accommodate transfers at this time.

Health and Safety Protocols

The safety of our students and staff is of utmost importance, therefore DCSD’s current health and safety protocols will remain in place. DCSD elementary schools should continue with the current approach of layering multiple health and safety protocols including wearing face coverings, frequent hand washing, social distancing, where possible, cleaning and disinfecting, and following protocols for isolation, quarantine, and outbreak.

Elementary schools should still work to physically distance students in schools to the extent possible. However, according to the Colorado Department of Education’s Reopening Schools Guidance (under Safer at Home)elementary students do not need to meet the 6-foot distance in classrooms or other locations, and normal class sizes may occur.

In cases where physical distancing of six feet is not possible, schools will still have other health and safety mitigation strategies in place. These include:

  • routines for regular hand-washing
  • face coverings for students and staff
  • limiting the number of people in classrooms and the number of people moving in and out of classrooms and hallways where feasible
  • increasing airflow and ventilation as much as possible
  • minimizing the sharing of equipment and materials as much as possible
  • using signage and markings to encourage safe distancing and one-way movement when possible
  • utilizing seating charts and arranging desks to face the same direction when possible
  • utilizing available spaces in the school and outdoor areas when possible
  • regular cleaning and disinfection in schools

Layering as many of these health and safety mitigation strategies as possible throughout each school day will provide the greatest protection against the spread of COVID-19.

Keeping Students Home When Sick

We continue to encourage parents to monitor the health of their children and keep them home from school when children exhibit any symptoms of COVID-19 and/or have a temperature greater than 100 degrees. Please reference this checklist to assist you in determining whether your child should attend school.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership on our Road to Return. We recognize there have been many twists and turns on this road and your ongoing willingness to transition where needed to best serve our students is incredibly appreciated. Should you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to visit the Road to Return page of our website, or email us at
